Hello

I have no sound on my HP laptop,  I recently did a windows update next thing I knew I had NO sound which was previously working before the update.  Device manager is flagging up the audio driver, tried trouble shooting, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, restarted the laptop and nothing seems to work.  Also visited HP website to see for any updates and literally nothings is working.  Am I missing something?

Thank you

Hi @Kamille108

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for all the steps you've already taken—we truly appreciate your effort. Since the issue began after a Windows update and the audio driver is flagged in Device Manager, let's walk through a few precise steps to restore your sound.

Step-by-step sound recovery guide for your HP laptop (Windows)

1. Run HP Audio Check

This tool performs diagnostics and can automatically fix audio issues.

  • Go to HP Audio Check
  • Scroll down and select “Launch now” under Audio Check
  • Follow the prompts to install HP Support Assistant if needed
  • Let the tool run and follow any repair suggestions

2. Roll Back the Audio Driver

If the update replaced your working driver, rolling back might restore it.

  • Press Windows + X, then select Device Manager
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers
  • Right-click your audio device (e.g., Realtek, Intel Smart Sound), then select Properties
  • Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver (if available)
  • Restart your laptop

3. Set the Correct Playback Device

Sometimes Windows switches the default output device after updates.

  • Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings
  • Under Output, ensure the correct device (e.g., Speakers/Headphones) is selected
  • Click Test to verify sound output

4. Reinstall Audio Driver from HP

If rollback isn’t available or doesn’t help, try a clean reinstall:

  • Go to Device Manager
  • Right-click your audio device and select Uninstall device
  • Check Delete the driver software for this device, then click Uninstall
  • Restart your laptop
  • Visit your product’s support page on HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your laptop model, download the latest audio driver, and install it

5. Check for Optional Windows Updates

Sometimes audio drivers are bundled under optional updates.

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates
  • Look under Driver updates and install any audio-related entries
  • Restart your system

If none of these steps resolve the issue, let’s also check if the audio service is running or if the device is disabled. I can guide you through that next.
