Hi @7516,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To help me understand the situation better, could you please share a bit more information?

Please let me know:

 1. How exactly are you connecting the record player to your HP laptop?

  • RCA (red/white) → 3.5mm AUX cable into laptop?
  • USB turntable plugged directly via USB?
  • Using an external USB audio interface
  • Connecting to the microphone jack or headphone combo jack?
  • HP laptops often do NOT have a true line-in port, which is important for turntables.

2. Does your record player have a built-in preamp?

  • This is a very common issue.
  • Turntables usually output a PHONO signal, which is extremely quiet unless amplified first.
  • Please check if your turntable has:
  • A PHONO/LINE switch
  • A preamp ON/OFF switch
  • If it’s set to PHONO, the laptop will barely record anything.

 3. What happens inside Windows when you try to record?

  • Does the recording level bar move at all?
    (Settings → System → Sound → Input)
  • What input device is selected?
(Microphone Array? Headset? Line-In, if available?)
  • What app are you using to record? Audacity, Voice Recorder, etc.?
  • These details will tell us whether Windows is receiving any signal at all.

 4. What cable are you using?

  • Just to confirm:
  • RCA → 3.5 mm TRS cable?
  • USB-only connection?
  • Headset splitter adapter?
  • Knowing the exact cable/adapter will help rule out compatibility issues.

5. Does the turntable output normally to speakers?

  • If you connect it to a speaker or amp:
  • Does it play at normal volume?
  • Is the audio clean?
  • This helps verify that the turntable itself is working fine.

 6. Your HP Laptop Model

  • Different HP models have different audio jacks:
  • Some have microphone-only input
  • Some have headset combo jacks
  • Very few have true line-in ports
  • If you can tell me the exact model (e.g., HP 15s-duxxxx, HP Pavilion x360, etc.), I can confirm what audio ports are available.

I hope this helps.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster!
