Defender disabled many options. Must select and approve for each to operate. Imagine the hours used to track this down because HP or Win. tech support didn't know when we spoke for 45 min. going over everything they could think of.

Hi @jonemiles63,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've had quite an ordeal with getting your microphone to work on your OMEN by HP 45L Gaming Desktop PC. Windows Defender can indeed have restrictive settings that may interfere with the functionality of various components, including the microphone. Here are some steps to ensure that your microphone settings are configured correctly and that Windows Defender isn't blocking it.
Check Microphone Privacy Settings:
- Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
- Go to Privacy & Security.
- Select Microphone.
- Ensure that the microphone access for the device is turned on.
- Check that apps you want to use the microphone with have the permission enabled.
Windows Defender Settings:
- Open Windows Security from the system tray or by searching in the start menu.
- Go to Virus & threat protection.
- Click on Manage settings under Virus & threat protection settings.
- Scroll down to Controlled folder access and click on Manage Controlled folder access.
- If Controlled folder access is turned on, you can either turn it off or allow the microphone application through it by adding it to the list of allowed apps.
Check Device Manager:
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Audio inputs and outputs.
- Right-click your microphone device and select Properties.
- Ensure the device is enabled and working properly. If not, try updating or reinstalling the driver.
Sound Settings:
- Right-click the sound icon in the system tray and select Sounds.
- Go to the Recording tab.
- Ensure your microphone is set as the default device.
- Test the microphone by speaking and checking if the green bars move.
Check Application Permissions: Some applications require explicit permission to access the microphone.
- Open the application settings and ensure the microphone is enabled.
- Check for any specific permissions that the application might need.
Windows Troubleshooter:
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find and run the troubleshooter for Recording Audio.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
