HP ENVY Desktop PC TE02-0000i RCTO Base Model

After I have been away from the PC, I find an 3F0 error message (Boot Device Not Found) on black screen.  Cycling the power button restarts the computer without error.   Setting the power mode to 'Never Sleep' resolves the issue.

I have Restored the Bios, Updated the Bios, and performed hardware diagnostics (UEFI): System Fast test and Component tests that all passed.

Hi @Warren1900,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the 3F0 Boot Device Not Found error, which typically points to an issue with the system's hard drive or the way the BIOS is configured to detect the boot drive. Since you've already restored and updated the BIOS and the diagnostics show no hardware issues, the problem may be related to power management settings or how the system wakes from sleep.

Here are a few steps to help narrow down or resolve the issue:

1. Check Power Settings in Windows

Since setting your PC to "Never Sleep" resolves the issue, it's possible the hard drive is not waking up correctly after sleep. To avoid this, you can adjust some power settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep.
  • Set the sleep options to Never (for both battery and plugged-in modes).
  • Then, under Additional Power Settings, click Change Plan Settings next to your power plan.
  • Click Change Advanced Power Settings and expand the Hard Disk section. Set Turn off hard disk after to Never.
  • Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management and set this to Off.

2. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup is known to cause issues with some systems when waking from sleep. Disabling it might help:

  • Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup (recommended).
  • Click Save changes and reboot your PC.

3. Check Boot Order in BIOS

Make sure that your primary boot drive (SSD/HDD) is at the top of the boot order in the BIOS:

  • Restart your PC and press the key (usually F10 or Esc) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup.
  • Navigate to the Boot Order or Boot Priority section.
  • Ensure that the boot drive (typically labeled as an SSD or HDD) is set as the first option.

4. Check Drive Connection and Health

Even though your diagnostics passed, it’s possible the drive or its connections are slightly loose. You can:

  • Power off your PC, unplug it, and carefully open the case.
  • Check that the data and power cables to the drive are securely connected.
  • If available, try switching to a different SATA or M.2 slot to rule out a port issue.

5. Driver and Firmware Updates

  • Ensure all relevant drivers, particularly storage or chipset drivers, are up to date from HP's support site.
  • Check for any firmware updates for the hard drive or SSD itself. Sometimes a firmware update for the drive can resolve power management or recognition issues.
