Hi:

Sorry that the BIOS update was not successful.

Unfortunately, I don't know how you can recover the PC from a failed BIOS update.

You may want to start a new discussion on that problem.

Hi:

There is a v8.17 BIOS update for your PC, but it was written to be run using Windows 8.

Whether or not it would be safe to run it on W11 as well, that I do not know.

It's good to hear from you (and so soon).😀

HP Image Assist would not help then correct? < https://support.hp.com/vn-en/document/ish_4123786-2338478-16

HPPC Hardware DIagnostic UEFI, also a no go? < https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact/solution/desktop/desktop-other

There is no boot tool similar to (Dell DDDP Tool) then I assume (for this machine in question)?

Thank you for sharing that link to the 8.17 BIOS revision (In .exe format). Why is this not found easily on the machines spec page here at HP?

You're very welcome.

There are no other ways to update the BIOS other through Windows.

So you'll have to decide if you are willing to take the risk of wrecking your PC by running the update on W11 vs the reward of having the presumably last BIOS update that HP will ever release for your PC.

I can't advise you on what to do.

I gave updated different model HP and Dell PCs BIOS' when running unsupported operating systems and never had a problem.

Whether or not you will have the same luck as I had with your PC would be impossible to predict.

Knowing that HP retired support for your PC in accordance with their policy of doing that for all consumer class PCs that have reached 10 years of age, rather than searching for drivers starting on the support page for the model number,  I did a general search for drivers on the web for your PCs model number, and found the driver page that way.

Fortunately, HP hasn't taken the driver page down yet.

Hi again, I have managed to get the updated-bios.exe running by turning on developer mode = on and Powershell execution policy to allow local  local PowerShell scripts to run without signing. = on

A fancy looking GUI pops up on Windows desktop and a status bar indicator is displayed....

Situation < status bar *continues* to cycle from left to right.....it has been about 15 minutes now. Are you aware of a command the would display if the process has been completed yet or not?

I don't want to try and powercycle the machine in case a *crisis* then occurs because the process has not completed properly.

Your thoughts are most welcome.

Hi:

Unfortunately, I don't know.

I've only run BIOS updates in Windows by double clicking on the exe file and following the on screen prompts.

The BIOS update then runs and after it's completed the PC automatically restarts.

@Paul_Tikkanen Hi again, ____________Sweet Necter!🤣

It seems to have worked! I was able to exit out of PowerShell by typing 'exit' then I simply  ticked the gui's exit 'x'.

Machine...powercycling.....keypress + f10 ..... System Bios is now version JOS_815.rom v8.15 ......

Thanks for your help with this!

You're very welcome.

The BIOS did not update because the PC should have reported it to be on v8.17.

Here's what the BIOS update does according to what HP published under the 'Fixes' section of the link I posted.

Updates Intel processor microcode support.

- Resolves system hang issue when resuming from Wake-on-RTC in Windows XP.
- Resolves boot issues when system configured with add-in graphics card.
- Resolves system hang issue when hot-unplugging and plugging keyboard during "Power-On Password POST" screen.

If your PC is not affected by any of the above 3 issues, there really isn't any need to update it.

Windows 8 was never available for download from Microsoft and Microsoft has removed the W8.1 ISO file download last year.

Would updating the BIOS in W8.1 be any safer than running it in W11?

It's not listed as a supported operating system.

Here is a helpful link from HP for how to update the BIOS:

Thanks, Paul... I spoke to soon above as you have seen. I am now using Rufus. 4.6.2208 to create an Image with https://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/ > Hirens BootCD PE x64. The Rufus settings that I am using are shown below. I am hoping to attached (bios update) sp64139.exe to the image on the usb once it is created. I don't know if the BIOS update will execute through Hirens BootCD PE x64 yet or not. I have not done this before. Thinking to put some other type of operating system on the machine after bios is updated. Thanks

I don't see how that will work because the BIOS update won't run in any other environment but Windows.

In other words, the file is not bootable.
