I havent had access to this PC in a couple of years and I booted it up and its telling me to put in a power on password. Ive already tried the ESC key, F10 key, and a halt code doesnt show up when I put in 3 failed entries. Im not able to take a part the back of the computer, I tried and it sounded like I was breaking it.

Can someone help?

@SterlingWeb,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

I understand the frustration -it is tough to get back into a PC after a long time away from it. The “Power-On Password” prompt you’re seeing is a security feature built into the BIOS. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way for us, the HP Community, to provide a reset or bypass code/method, and trying to force open your PC could risk damaging the PC.

For security reasons, only HP Support is authorized to help with clearing or resetting a BIOS/Power-On password, and they’ll normally ask for proof of ownership before assisting.

The best next step is to contact HP Support directly with your PC’s exact model and serial number. They’ll guide you through the process.

Here’s the link to get started: Contact Official HP® Support - United States | HP® Support.

Bottom line: It’s not something you can safely do on your own, but HP can help you get access again once ownership is verified.

Kind Regards,
