Sorry my English language skills are just as bad as my computer skills. HP in Germany dosn't provide any services to me, so I have to try out international help:

HP had suggestet a BIOS-Update. After installing it doesn't cause any problems except for the fact that now all usb accessories don't turn off when switching off the pc. In Windows 11 settings I found "on off controls" but there is no difference in selecting the options. So there might be a specific setting of the BIOS?

My questions: Does HP provide services in this case in other countries? Is it possible for me, to chance some of the settings?

Thank you!

Hi @Traurig,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To help narrow down what’s happening, could you tell me a little more?

  • After shutting down, are all USB ports staying powered (mouse LEDs, external drives, keyboard backlight)?
  • Did this start immediately after the BIOS update?
  • Do you know which BIOS version you updated to?
  • Are you shutting down using Start > Power > Shut down, or does this also happen after a full shutdown (Shift + Shutdown)?

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to see what’s controlling the USB power:

Windows Power Settings

Even though you mentioned the on/off controls didn’t help, check these if you haven’t already:

  • Settings > System > Power > Additional Power Settings > Choose what the power buttons do
    • Make sure Turn on fast startup is off (this can cause USB ports to stay powered).

Device Manager USB Settings

  • Open Device Manager
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers
  • For each USB Root Hub / USB Hub:
    • Right-click → Properties → Power Management tab
    • Check Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

If you can share what options you see in your BIOS or what your USB devices do during shutdown, I’ll help you pinpoint the exact setting!

I hope this helps.

Thank you for the detailed answer! No, I don't know the latest Version of BIOS. Yes, as far as I know, the effect began after the update to the recommended BIOS.

My attempts to change the settings via the Windows 11 system were unsuccessful:

Some of the USB devices don't show a possibility to change wether the Computer is allowed to swich of the energy or not (in German language "Energieverwaltung").

The settings regarding energy/energy saving appear (to me) to be such that the computer should shut down completely.

Did I miss something in Windows?

I'm not sure if I, as a layman, should experiment with the BIOS.  That's why I bought a power strip with an on/off switch: A simple not very elegant solution. 😉

Hi @Traurig,

Thank you for your response .

I Appreciate that you have tried attempting the troublshooting steps .

1.To know the current bios version please find the below steps :

You can find your HP laptop's BIOS version using the System information tool  in Windows by pressing Windows + R, typing msinfo32, and pressing Enter, then looking for "BIOS Version/Date". Alternatively, you can restart your laptop, repeatedly press Esc or F10 during startup to enter the BIOS menu, and the version will be displayed on the main screen.

2.Optional windows update :

To update optional Windows updates on an HP laptop, go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Select the updates you want, then click Download & install. Your laptop will download and install the selected updates, and you may need to restart it to finish the process.

3. USB port disabling in the BIOS :

To disable USB ports in the BIOS on an HP laptop, first restart your laptop and repeatedly press the Escape key to enter the BIOS menu. Navigate to the "Configuration" or "System Configuration" menu, find "Built-in Device Options," and then disable the "External USB Port" setting or "Legacy USB Support"

I hope this helps.

Hi @Deep_World!

1) The current BIOS-Version is AMI F.21 (updated with "HP Support Assistent").

2) I always keep Windows up to date, but I'm careful with preview updates. So the latest update I installed till now is KB5068861.

3) I'm unsure about the details of your language, so I'd like to ask: "Disable" means "permanently switched off"? That wouldn't help, because I need most of the usb-connections.

Thank you for your continued attempts to help! It's not a big problem if we can't find a solution for turning off the USB ports along with the PC. My newly purchased power switch for the PC works perfectly - of course. 😉

I found a brute-force but functional solution with the additional power switch. But of course, I'd be happy if there were a clean software solution. After all, it worked correctly before the update.

That's why I'm finding it difficult to click on "accept as solution."

Happy holidays!
