I have been getting a message to update my BIOS for a few weeks now, which has prevented installing some WIndows updates, and finally have been able to get around to it. I go to the support page for my laptop, download the BIOS Update there, and then run it. It asks me what I want to do, I select Update and then click Continue... and it stays there, doing nothing but using memory and CPU resources until I get frustrated and CTRL-ALT-DEL and end the process.
Not sure what to do - HP wants to charge me $100 for something that is a result of their not having the right piece of software available. And this is keeping me from updating my OS. When I called to see about support, the tech on the phone even said this had been a common issue lately - so if they KNOW it is something wrong on their end, why the crazy cost to help me fix it? I would pay $25 or so, but $100 is 20% of what I paid for the computer in the first place!
Help!

Hi
Are you having a problem updating Windows 10 to version 1709? Try the update with no peripherals (including wireless printer) attached to your PC.
I see nothing about a BIOS fix for Windows 10 in the "Fixes" section at this HP Support site. There could a fix in the BIOS update.
I do see some newer Network drivers dated in 2017.
You are lucky the BIOS update did not "brick" your PC.
Try installing any newer hardware updates available at HP's Driver support site. This may fix the Windows 10 update problem.

I appreciate the thought behind your post, but I know where to get the file. But it won't install - it does nothing for hours. If I click on the window while the circle is still spinning, it pops up the Windows box saying the program needs to be closed. So it isn't the source of the file - other than HP isn't fixing it, which I suppose does go to the source.
As I said, HP knows this is an issue, but there is nothing online to address this. Extremely poor customer service to know there is a problem and blantantly refuse to talk about it. I have found at least a dozen other posts from people with the same problem, going back months, and everyone of us who reached out to HP has gotten the same thing - "We will be happy to help you if you pay $100, or $15 dollars a month for a year's service" which is simply unacceptable. As long as the updates they make work, I don't need their help - this is only the second time I have ever had to call them, luckily the other time was a problem as I was setting up a new laptop, so they had no choice but to help me without charging. (Being fair, of the posts I have seen saying the same problem, only about six of us have called).
I have used HP laptops for all but two years of the last 20+ years, and now they are making me look at other companies. All for something they have done wrong, and are making no effort to fix...

TO Grzwacz: I also appreciate your suggestions, but it isn't any drivers - all of them are up-to-date, except the BIOS. And now I am getting a Windows alert that they cannot install the latest security updates until I update the BIOS, which won't install.
I am thankful, however, as you said, that the effort to try to get it to update didn't brick my laptop!
Not that I think HP cares - sorry, but I am so irritated after researching this for two days and seeing HP never answers anyone's complaints about this not working. I guess they are simply so money-hungry that customer service means nothing to them - and neither does the money we have spent on their products.
