Hi Paul, success!! My beastie is alive.
My son-in-law came over to help me rebuild a new machine.
We had one last attempt which worked.

My error was not expanding the BIOS recovery file on the USB before using it. (Rookie mistake).

So a million 🙏 to you for your help.

Hi:

Perhaps if you enter the serial number in the search window at the link below it will provide the motherboard name.

HP PartSurfer

If the HP motherboard name is provided, then you should be able to look up the motherboard specs which will have the ROM family SSID.

Thank you Paul Tikkanen - very much appreciated.

I have followed your tip and found the ROM Family and file.

I will try resetting my machine tonight.

You're very welcome.

Below is the usual procedure for recovering the BIOS after you create the USB BIOS recovery drive.

These instructions should appear on the screen after the recovery drive has been created.

1. Power off the device to be recovered.

2. Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port.

3. Power on the device.

4. The device may reboot up to 3 times with indicator lights on the keyboard flashing, or the screen appearing blank for short time.

Hopefully, that will fix the problem for you.

Thank you Paul - have really appreciated your help.

Looks like it won’t boot off the USB drive.

Staying in the same BIOS failure loop.

Sorry, that didn't work for you.

Unfortunately, I don't have any other suggestions for you to try.
