BIOS software required - Pavilion Desktop - 550-153na

I'm looking to reflash the BIOS software on the motherboard for a Pavilion Desktop - 550-153na.

It is not detecting boot devices (SATA SSD or USB).  The BIOS detects the SSD in the storage menu, and will carry out the hardware checks with no problem.

The UEFI diagnostics (booted from USB) did not identify any hardware faults.

Attempting to run the BIOS recovery goes through a process of various beeps, but fails to complete, with a blinking LED of 2 long and 2 short beeps, which I understand means that the recovery has failed due to the BIOS being corrupt.

There are no drivers or BIOS firmware listed on the HP support page any more.

The motherboard is ipm17-dd rev 1.04

Below is the link to the parts list for your PC.

It has the HP 'Odense' motherboard which has a SSID of 2B47.

Below are the info and exe file links to the latest BIOS update HP has for your PC (A0.20):

The problem is I don't believe that there is any way you can run the update without being in Windows.

Thanks Paul, looks like I'm a bit stuck then if it's a windows based update programme.

I don't suppose there's any tips or tricks that I can use to try and get the bios to detect the boot devices?  it seems like a similar problem to the one on this thread, but unfortunately these steps didn't work for me:

Unfortunately, I don't have any ideas for you to try.

Before I posted the link to the driver, I ran it on my PC to see if it would give me a prompt to create a USB recovery drive which could be used to try and recover the BIOS outside of Windows.

It did not do that.  All it did was unpack to a folder.

I then opened the folder to see if it contained any usable BIOS files, which it did not.

I just has two other exe files inside the folder.

I then used the free 7-Zip file utility to see if I could extract the exe files into a folder but it would not let me.

This would be something that would require professional help and I am not optimistic that even a PC repair shop could fix it.

I came across a very interesting post this morning:

Apparently, you can create a USB BIOS recovery flash drive with the file I posted the other day if you make it using a PC running W7.

Maybe it will also work with W10.

I don't have any PC's running either OS, so I can't test it out.

Hopefully, this will allow you to put your PC back to good use.

Hi Paul,

I just logged back on to report that same point - I managed to get up and running again by trying updating settings in the BIOS - I think that it was loading defaults, then clearing security keys that did the trick.

When I got back into Windows (win10) and tried running one of the unpacked .exe files, one of the options was to create a BIOS recovery USB.

In the end, I didn't update the BIOS as I didn't want to tempt fate, but hopefully that helps someone in the future.
