Hi @Mayowa-1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the BIOS is not properly recognizing your SSD as the primary boot device, which could be due to several reasons, especially after switching operating systems. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue.

Check Boot Order in BIOS

  1. Enter BIOS Setup: Restart your laptop and press the appropriate key (usually F2, F10, F12, Esc, or Del) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup.
  2. Navigate to Boot Options: Find the Boot or Boot Order menu.
  3. Set SSD as Primary Boot Device: Ensure your SSD is set as the primary boot device. Save changes and exit.

Verify SSD Detection

  1. Enter BIOS Setup: Follow the steps above to enter BIOS.
  2. Check for SSD Detection: Look for a section like “Storage” or “Drives” to see if your SSD is detected. If not, there might be a physical connection issue or a problem with the SSD itself.

Check Connections

  1. Turn Off Laptop: Power down and unplug your laptop.
  2. Open Back Panel: If you're comfortable, open the back panel of your laptop (refer to your laptop’s manual for instructions).
  3. Check SSD Connection: Ensure the SSD is securely connected to the motherboard.

Repair Boot Configuration

  1. Create Windows Installation Media: Use another computer to create a Windows installation USB drive.
  2. Boot from USB: Insert the USB drive into your laptop and boot from it (you may need to select the USB drive from the boot menu).
  3. Access Recovery Tools: Choose “Repair your computer” instead of “Install now.”
  4. Run Startup Repair: Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Follow the prompts.

Reinstall Windows

If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, you may need to reinstall Windows:

  1. Back Up Data: Ensure your data is backed up if possible.
  2. Reinstall Windows: Boot from the Windows installation USB drive, and choose the “Install now” option. Follow the prompts to reinstall Windows on your SSD.

Update BIOS

In some cases, updating the BIOS can resolve boot issues:

  1. Download BIOS Update: Go to the HP support website, search for your laptop model, and download the latest BIOS update.
  2. Follow Update Instructions: Follow the provided instructions to update your BIOS.

Check for Firmware/Driver Updates

Ensure all firmware and drivers are up-to-date. Sometimes, updates can resolve boot issues.

Note:

  • Check for UEFI vs Legacy Mode: Ensure your BIOS is set to the correct mode (UEFI or Legacy) that matches how Windows was installed.
  • Secure Boot Settings: Verify that Secure Boot is configured correctly in BIOS.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
