I am getting a boot device not found error. It says please install operating system. Hard disk (3FO). My bios does not show my NVme ssd's. I already did a system diagnostics and everything looks good. Motherboard is fine. System diagnostics did see my boot drive and it passed as it should since its new. My machine just boots than freezes when not seeing my boot drive. I miss the days of jumpers. So how do I get my machine to see my drives? Also, I tried hitting F9 and it said no such files exist. I went into my bios and returned everything to factory settings as well which didn't solve the problem. Its like bios security disabling my drives so they cant be written to. Is that possible? If thats the case how do I reenable my drive slots?Do I have to reinstall my bios? If so how do I do so when I cannot enter windows? It would be great if I could do so with a USB thumb drive. This setup has an Intel 11 gen Core I7 running Windows 11 pro .Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi @mfell2112,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing could be related to a BIOS configuration problem, drive detection issue, or security feature causing your NVMe drives not to be recognized. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.

Verify BIOS Settings

  • Access BIOS: Repeatedly press the Esc or F10 key during boot to access the BIOS setup.
  • Check Boot Mode:
    • Ensure the system is set to UEFI mode (not Legacy) as most NVMe drives require UEFI.
  • Secure Boot:
    • Check if Secure Boot is enabled in the BIOS. If you suspect it's blocking your drives, disable Secure Boot temporarily and see if the drives appear.
  • Storage Configuration:
    • Look for a setting like "NVMe Configuration" or "Storage Configuration" and ensure the NVMe slots are enabled.
    • Ensure RAID is off unless you're explicitly using a RAID setup.

Update BIOS

  • If the BIOS is outdated or has a bug, updating it may resolve the issue.
  • Download BIOS Update:
    • Visit the HP support website, enter your desktop's model, and download the latest BIOS update.
  • Create a Bootable USB for BIOS Update:
    1. Use another computer to download the BIOS update utility.
    2. Follow the instructions provided by HP to create a bootable USB with the BIOS update files.
  • Perform the Update:
    • Insert the USB drive, power on your desktop, and press Esc to open the startup menu.
    • Select the option to update the BIOS from the USB.

Check NVMe Drive Installation

  • Ensure the NVMe drives are securely installed in the motherboard slots.
  • If possible, test the NVMe drives in another system to verify functionality.

Perform a CMOS Reset

  • Power off the system and unplug it.
  • Remove the CMOS battery (a small coin-shaped battery on the motherboard) for about 5-10 minutes, then reinstall it.
  • This will reset the BIOS to default factory settings, which may resolve the issue.

Test Boot Order

  • Access the BIOS and ensure the NVMe drive is listed as the first boot device.
  • If the drive isn’t listed, select "Detect Drives" or a similar option to refresh the drive list.

Reinstall Windows (if necessary)

  • If the BIOS recognizes the NVMe drives but the system doesn’t boot, the OS installation might be corrupted.
  • Create a bootable Windows 11 USB installation media using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool on another computer.
  • Boot your system from the USB drive and reinstall Windows.

Advanced Options

  • Disable Intel VMD: If your system has Intel Volume Management Device (VMD) enabled, it may require specific drivers. Disable it in the BIOS temporarily to see if it allows the NVMe drives to be recognized.
  • Check Firmware Updates: Some NVMe drives have firmware updates. Check the manufacturer’s website for updates and apply them if possible using a compatible system.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

A big problem I am having is getting drivers and bios updates or say the CORRECT Intel Rapid storage inf. files. The reason is my PC is refurbished. I punch in my serial and my PC is setup on the HP website and HP says no bios updates or drivers are available for my computer. Thank you for providing the info hopefully Ill get it working.
