I have an HP Pavilion Desktop TP01-3016. After unpacking from a move I discovered that my computer is being held hostage by Bitlocker. I was able to locate the key. However, Bitlocker has disabled my USB ports--so I can't enter the key because my keyboard and mouse don't work. Short of buying a new computer (which I CANNOT afford right now!!), is there any way to get my USB ports to work so I can enter the key.
Here is what I've tried so far:
*Unplugging the computer, holding the power button down for a few moments, then replugging the computer.
*Hitting the F10 key repeatedly when I turn on the computer and get the black screen just before I get the blue Bitlocker screen.
*Hitting the Esc key repeatedly while doing the steps above.
I am ready to cry. Is there anything else I can do to save my computer?

Hi  @nemszabad,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I can hear how  this must feel, and I want to reassure you that we’ll work through this together. Thank you for sharing the details of what you’ve already tried  that helps narrow things down.

A couple of quick check:

  • When you reach the BitLocker recovery screen, do any lights come on your keyboard (like Caps Lock or Num Lock)?
  • Are your keyboard and mouse connected directly to the rear USB ports, or are they plugged into the front panel or a hub?
  • Have you tried both wired and wireless peripherals, or only one type?

Here are a few   steps you can try:

1.Switch USB Ports Plug your keyboard into a different USB port, preferably one on the back of the tower. Sometimes the front panel ports don’t initialize early enough during BitLocker recovery.

2.Use a Basic Wired Keyboard If you’re currently using a wireless keyboard/mouse combo, try a simple wired USB keyboard. BitLocker recovery screens often don’t load drivers for wireless dongles.

3.BIOS/UEFI Settings

Power on the PC and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.

From there, press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.

Look for a setting called Legacy USB Support or USB Keyboard Support and make sure it’s enabled.

Save changes and restart.

4.Try Safe Mode Recovery If you can’t get past the BitLocker screen, you may need to boot from a Windows recovery USB. Since your ports aren’t working, this depends on step 2 (using a wired keyboard). Once you’re in recovery, you can enter the BitLocker key.

I know this feels like your computer is “locked away,” but in most cases, enabling USB support in BIOS or switching to a wired keyboard resolves the issue.

I hope this helps.

Thank you Deep_World for responding.

To answer some of your questions...Yes, my keyboard and mouse are plugged into the back of my computer, not the front. And yes, they are both wired. I have never used wireless peripherals at home.

I went through your message and tried powering on, hitting the Esc key repeatedly until I got the black startup screen, then hitting the F10 key repeatedly. Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue.

You mentioned something about a Windows recovery USB. What is that? Is it something I can order from Staples?

If this Windows recovery thingie doesn't fix my problem, my next and probably last resort is to see if I can get it replaced. I bought the computer in December 2024 and purchased a 2-year warranty for it, so the warranty is still good. But it makes me angry that I have to completely replace a relatively new computer and lose a lot of files because of a software glitch. I can't possibly be the only person who's had this issue.

Hi @nemszabad,

Thanks for your response.

Let me clarify a few points for you:

Windows recovery USB is a bootable flash drive that contains tools to help repair or reinstall Windows if your system won’t start properly. It can be used to:

Access troubleshooting options (like Startup Repair or System Restore).

Reinstall Windows while keeping or removing files.

Recover your system if the operating system has become corrupted.

You can create one yourself on another working Windows PC by using the built‑in “Create a recovery drive” tool. You’ll need a blank USB drive (at least 32 GB).
Kindly find the link for more details on USB  BIOS recovery :  Click here .

If you have access to another Windows computer, I recommend creating a recovery USB there and then using it to boot your affected PC.

Insert the USB into your computer, power it on, and press the appropriate key (often F9 or Esc) to select the USB as the boot device.

From there, you’ll see options to repair or reinstall Windows.

Since you purchased the computer in December 2024 and have a 2‑year warranty. If recovery media doesn’t resolve the issue, you can absolutely reach out to the Authorised HP Service center .

My suggestion: try the recovery USB option first, as it often resolves startup issues without needing a replacement. If that doesn’t work, you can reach out to the service center for the warranty repair.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for responding.

I just tried reaching out to HP Support and was told that they are no longer supporting the Pavilion TP01-3000 series. Why was I sold a 2 year warranty if you guys weren't going to offer support for that length of time??

The only other computer I have access to (other than at the library, where I can't download things) is an old Lenovo tablet that doesn't even have software updates anymore. I'll try your suggestion, but I'm not optimistic.

Also: how is a flash drive going to help if my USB ports are disabled??

I am NOT HAPPY with the lack of support from everyone involved (Staples, Asurion, HP). But I appreciate you trying to help.

Hi @nemszabad

Thank you for resoponding.

I would like to inform that USB port functionality is typically controlled by BIOS settings - not BitLocker directly. If USB ports are entirely unresponsive, verify they are not disabled in BIOS under “USB Configuration” or “Port Settings.” and enable them. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Use a Bluetooth/wireless keyboard to enter the BitLocker recovery key manually at the pre-boot screen.

  1. Check BIOS settings (press F10 at startup):
    • Ensure Secure Boot is enabled.
    • Verify USB Boot is allowed if using a USB recovery drive.
    • Confirm TPM is enabled and healthy.
  2. If hardware changes occurred (e.g., BIOS update), follow HP’s guidance to clear Secure Boot keys and re-establish trusted platform state.esolve this issue, follow the steps provided below:

I have already tried hitting the Esc key repeatedly when turning the computer on. I have also tried doing the same thing with the F10 key. Neither works.
