I have a:

HP m01-f0033w Desktop Computer and when I power on, I get a black screen. I hear some drives momentarily and it is possible it is getting through the boot sequence but since the PC is so quiet, I cannot be sure. Black screen at all times. I have changed the PS, tried both onboard video and an internal PCI video card and still no luck. I want to try to reset the CMOS but I don't know the pin configurations. If someone can tell me this info or the diagram, that would help.  I might be able to swap out RAM if I can find another stick. I had also pulled the SSD NVME stick (primary drive) to be sure that was ok and it is fine and did a diagnostic on it and it passed no issues and can see the files on it without a problem. If that does not help, I am not sure what else to try other than assuming there is a MB failure.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Thank you for your reply. I am glad to report I was able to resolve the problem. I found some replacement RAM so I had tried combinations of the two 8 Gb sticks I had and failed so I installed a new single stick and the PC powered right up.  I did have another similar Pavillion PC that had a AMD 3300 CPU that I was trying to upgrade to a 4700G and it did the same thing. On that unit, this similar issue happened so I returned the original 3300 back into the computer and it first had just the black screen.  I then reset the  CMOS by first via the jumpers which did not work and then pulled the CMOS battery,  I got the error code beeps. 3 Long and 2 short. So then I removed the RAM and alternated the stick positions but that did not work. I then isolated single sticks and with the one stick, it was able to start up and function normally and no more beep codes.

I will open a different case for upgrading the BIOS on this computer. I had tried to use the Support Assistant but it did not work. I have AMI F.30 and it claims to be able to read an AMD 5700X but I had also read in other responses that it may require even newer versions and there is a specific process to follow via AMI.

Hi @JDN541,

Thank you for your response,

It's great to hear you resolved the RAM issue! Swapping and isolating RAM sticks is a classic yet effective way to troubleshoot boot problems, and your persistence paid off. Thanks for sharing the detailed steps you took—it can help others facing similar issues.

Regarding your other Pavilion PC and the BIOS upgrade for AMD 4700G or 5700X compatibility, it's good that you're cautious. BIOS upgrades can indeed be tricky, especially when dealing with newer CPUs. A few tips for your planned BIOS update:

  • Verify Compatibility: Double-check the motherboard model and the exact BIOS version required for the AMD 5700X. HP often releases specific BIOS updates for new CPU support.
  • Use the Official Source: Download the BIOS update only from HP’s official website for your Pavilion model. Avoid third-party sources to minimize risks.
  • Follow the Instructions: If HP provides a specific process via AMI (American Megatrends Inc.), follow those steps carefully. This may include creating a bootable USB drive or using a BIOS flash utility.
  • Backup Current BIOS: If your motherboard supports it, back up your current BIOS before proceeding. This can be a lifesaver in case something goes wrong.
  • Stable Power Source: Make sure the PC is connected to a reliable power source during the update to prevent interruptions.
  • Reset CMOS After Upgrade: Sometimes, resetting the CMOS after a BIOS upgrade can help ensure proper functionality, especially after swapping CPUs.

If you're still having trouble with HP Support Assistant not working for the BIOS update, you can try a direct download from HP’s website using your PC’s product number. Alternatively, you could manually search for updates in the BIOS settings if your system has a built-in update utility.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
