Boot CD for XP

Old XP Pro machine - I was trying to copy some files off it when I accidentally renamed several driver files and now it won't get past "welcome to windows" dialog, "ctrl-alt-del to log in", even in safe mode. All I need is a CMD prompt to rename those files back and all should be well, but it won't boot far enough. The PC (I had four of these) did not ship with the recovery console which I understand can provide a DOS-type prompt. I've looked at several "virtual DOS" type applications but they all seem horrendously overweight. Tried FreeDos, which did produce a C: prompt but didn't actually recognise the HDD, only some "Temp" directory. To do a full install of FreeDos looks as if it wants to reformat the disc - again massive overkill. Surely it's not a lot to ask - a boot CD that will show a CMD prompt with a basic REN function! Any ideas?

When stuck with a problem like that, I go for a simple Linux Live OS.  Make a Live CD of the "flavor" you like and boot to the Live CD.  It will give you a OS that can rename the files, once you find where they are, without making changes to the Windows OS.  I like Ubuntu or Knoppix, but try any of the many to fix the described dilemma.

OldMan, you hero! After several attempts at finding a version that would fit on a CD (no DVD drive on that PC) I had BHODI up and running. Didn't take long to find the file manager and, het presto, all the broken files renamed or replaced. Machine works exactly as before. Can't thank you enough. Whoever said computers were for teenagers?
