Greetings,

I have recently encountered an issue with my HP EliteDesk 800 G6 SFF. On a number of occasions, the SSD will not be detected on boot up.

Error message:
BootDevice Not Found

Please install an operating system on your hard disk.

Sometimes this issue can be resolved by removing the m.2 SSD from slot 1 to slot 2 and it would boot up and work for a number of days/weeks without crashing. At other times the computer would just instantly crash to a black screen.

Here are the steps I have taken to attempt resolve the issue:

  1. Completely formatted the SSD and reinstalled Windows 11.
  2. Updated to the latest drivers available on the HP website.
  3. Updated and reset the BIOS.
  4. Completed hardware diagnostics for both RAM and SSD, with no errors detected...if the SSD can be recognized.

I swapped out the SSD and the issue disappeared. It would be easy to say the SSD is faulty and swap it out but in my extensive research I found that this problem has been widely reported especially on systems using the Micron 2300 m.2 SSD.

I noticed that on 13th December 2024, Lenovo, have pushed out a firmware update addressing this very issue for the exact same drive that is having issues - MTFDHBA256TDV:
Critical Firmware Update for Micron NVMe drives - Lenovo Support US
NVMe Solid State Drive Firmware Update Utility for Windows 11, 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad - Lenovo Suppo...

The current firmware version of the SSD is HPS0032.

Additionally, I have tried using the Micron Storage Executive application to update the Firmware of the SSD but it detected "OEM Firmware" and stated "Automated firmware download for this SSD is not supported at this time. This SSD contains Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)-specific firmware. Contact the OEM through which the drive or system was purchased for support."

Hence, I am reaching out for support.

Can you please advise if there's a firmware update for this issue that could be made available.

Thank you for your time.

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing the details of your issue with the HP EliteDesk 800 G6 SFF. It’s clear you’ve already gone above and beyond with troubleshooting, and I can imagine how frustrating it must be to still run into the Boot Device Not Found error (3F0) despite all your efforts.

You're absolutely right about the Micron 2300 m.2 SSD being the likely culprit here. Many users have encountered similar problems, especially with this specific SSD model. I saw that Lenovo has recently pushed out a firmware update to address this very issue, which definitely seems like a step in the right direction.

I also understand the frustration of trying to update the firmware via Micron Storage Executive and running into the OEM-specific firmware roadblock. It’s tough when the update tools aren’t fully compatible.

I’ve put together a helpful guide that walks through the process of fixing the Boot Device Not Found (3F0) error on HP laptops and desktops. You might find some extra insights or troubleshooting tips there that could be useful: How to Fix Boot Device Not Found (3F0) Error in HP Laptops and Desktops.

If that doesn’t do the trick, I’d recommend reaching out to HP support with all the details on your SSD and the current firmware version. They may have additional firmware updates or a workaround specific to your system.
