Hi @ESJA,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. We understand how alarming it is when your HP notebook shows “No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed”. This error usually means the system cannot find a valid operating system to boot from, which can happen due to:

  • Loose or disconnected storage drive
  • Corrupted boot sector or OS
  • Failed hard drive or SSD

Steps to Fix the Issue

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the notebook.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.).
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power and turn on the notebook.

2. Check BIOS Settings

  • Power on and immediately press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Ensure the internal drive is detected under Storage.
  • If not detected, the drive may be disconnected or failed.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Press EscF2 for System Diagnostics.
  • Run Storage Test to check the health of the hard drive/SSD.
  • If the test fails, the drive needs replacement.

Guide: HP PCs – Testing for Hardware Failures

4. Repair Boot Sector

If the drive is detected and passes diagnostics:

  • Boot from a Windows Recovery USB.
  • Select Repair your computer → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Command Prompt.
  • Run: bootrec /fixmbr
             bootrec /fixboot
             bootrec /rebuildbcd

5. Reinstall Windows (Last Resort)

If the OS is corrupted beyond repair:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
