HP Z4 G4 Workstation
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I have a powerful HP Z4G4 with the following CPU, RAM and video card:

  • Intel Core i9-10920X CPU
  • 32 GB RAM
  • NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000

I expected it would boot very quickly. However, it takes 52 seconds before the Windows logon screen appears. Until then it displays "Protected by HP Sure Start".

  • Is this normal behavior?
  • Is HP Sure Start taking 52 seconds?
  • Is HP Sure Start related to HP Wolf Security or are these different solutions for different purposes?

Thanks in advance!

"Sure Start" checks the bios to see if it has been tampered with.  Your 52 seconds is not that bad as I read complaints of up to 6 minutes to boot when googling.

If you are in a secure environment you can disable sure start.  If your system is part of a network and the network manager has set group policy to use "Sure Start" then I recommend you simply put your workstation to sleep or let it hibernate instead of turning it off.

[edit] Booting from an M.2 SSD can make a huge difference in speed

Thanks a lot!

To be honest, the 52 seconds is not a real problem for me, but I was worried something was wrong with my hardware (because my old PC with lower specs is booting much faster). Now that I know it's normal I will accept the 52 seconds without complaints!

Another reason I was a bit worried is because my PC sometimes becomes really slow when I run a Norton Full System scan. I think it has something to do with conflicts between HP Wolf Security and Norton, but that's just a guess.

Do you know if HP Sure Start and HP Wolf Security are part of the same suite?

Thanks again!

It is part of same suite as it is listed in below picture

https://wolfsecurity-business.com/hp-wolf-security/

Wolf is designed to replace legacy anti-virus according to documentation

Legacy anti-virus would include McAfee, Norton, etc

A: HP Wolf Pro Security includes next-generation antivirus tool intended to replace the customer's legacy antivirus solution. For it to run effectively, customers must remove their legacy antivirus solution and use HP Wolf Pro Security's next-generation antivirus as their exclusive antivirus tool.

Using norton with wolf will slow down system.  There could even be 30 second timeouts if  both antivirus attempt to scan the same file at the same time.

I once checked my Event Viewer and discovered dozen of timeouts due to McAfee and Defender both running but that was my fault as I had enabled Defender not knowing about Dell's McAfee being installed.
