HP Compaq 6000 pro

Hi, I’m having a problem booting TrueNAS on an HP Compaq 6000 Pro. I’m trying to boot from a USB flash drive, which works on other computers, but for some reason, it doesn’t work on either of my two HP Compaq 6000 Pro machines.

I’ve tried restoring the BIOS settings to their defaults and updating the BIOS but instead, I get a warning saying, “USB drive is missing or it’s bad.”

I’ve also tried switching from a USB 3.0 flash drive to a USB 2.0 one, but that didn’t help either.

I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Hi @szambonurek,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

The HP Compaq 6000 Pro is a retired product, so support and documentation are limited, and assistance is provided on a best-effort basis.

Since the USB flash drive works on other computers but is not detected correctly on either HP Compaq 6000 Pro, first check whether the system can detect and test a USB device:

  1. Disconnect all unnecessary USB devices.
  2. Connect a different, known-working USB 2.0 flash drive to a rear USB port.
  3. Turn on the computer and repeatedly press F2.
  4. If HP Hardware Diagnostics opens, run the available USB or system tests.
  5. If F2 diagnostics are unavailable, restart the computer and repeatedly press F9 to open the Boot Menu.
  6. Check whether the USB flash drive appears as a boot option.
  7. If it is not listed, restart and press F10 to open Computer Setup.
  8. Check that the USB ports and booting from removable media are enabled.
  9. Save the changes and check the F9 Boot Menu again.

If another USB flash drive is detected and passes the test, recreate the TrueNAS installation media and try again. If different USB drives are not detected or fail the hardware test, the USB controller or system board may require inspection.

Main correction: Removed unsupported statements about the TrueNAS boot format and kept the response focused on verifying the USB device, F2 diagnostics, F9 Boot Menu, and F10 settings.

Take care and have an amazing day!
