I have a pretty ancient Touchsmart IQ800 all in one desktop - but I can't get it to boot from USB. There's no "Boot from USB" option available in BIOS, and there seems no BIOS update more recent.
I've seen mentions of switching off "secure boot" for other HP devices, but this doesn't even have that option. Is this a lost cause?

Some of the really old models did not support boot from USB but it might be that the USB drive must be in the USB port and must be bootable for it to show up in the boot menu.
Try it with a known bootable USB in the port and then you might try
Start tapping the Esc key BEFORE starting the PC and then press the start button.
Keep tapping the Esc key until a popup menu shows. Then pick Boot menu from that popup menu, F9
