HP EliteDesk 800 35W G4 Desktop Mini PC

Hi, I bought a used HP Elitedesk 800 G4 mini PC as I'd like to install the Linux-based Batocera Retro Gaming emulation platform on it as a surprise for my college kid who will be returning for the holidays. Unfortunately, however, I've been experiencing a series of problems. Using the Balena etcher program to flash an image file, I've installed Batocera on a USB stick, on an external SSD, and most recently, on the internal M.2 SSD itself. The common thread is that I get the "Selected boot image did not authenticate" message when I boot the PC. I try to disable secure boot in BIOS Sure Start and also in the BIOS setup, entering the numeric codes, but the "selected boot image did not authenticate" message persists. I have been trying to "clear all secure boot keys" but the option is always greyed out. Upon rebooting, secure boot does not seem to stay disabled, even after I "save all changes and exit." All I want is for the system to accept my Batocera drive image, which I've verified on another platform. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! Ben

I found a solution that works for me, in case anyone encounters the same or similar issue.

When I attempted to disable Bios Sure Start, and disable Secure Boot, I had been entering the numeric codes in my keypad instead of the number keys above my keyboard. It turns out you need to use the number keys above the keyboard for these changes to take effect. When I did this, I was able to disable secure boot and clear the secure boot keys.

I understand the challenge you're facing. To address the 'Selected boot image did not authenticate' issue, have you tried updating the BIOS firmware to the latest version? Sometimes, newer BIOS versions come with fixes for boot-related problems. Additionally, ensure that the USB stick or SSD is formatted correctly for the Batocera image. If the issue persists, you might want to explore community forums for your specific PC model or Batocera support for tailored solutions. Best of luck, and I hope your college kid enjoys the surprise!

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply! I actually figured it out and got it working! I had updated the BIOS and firmware and the problem persisted. I had been trying to disable secure boot by using numeric pad keys instead of the numbers above the keyboard to type in the codes that the BIOS provided to disable it. The BIOS screen doesn’t tell you if the code was successfully or unsuccessfully entered or indicate that the number keys above the keyboard are the right ones to press. But when I finally used the correct keys to type in the numeric codes, secure boot was successfully disabled, I was able to clear the secure boot keys, and install Batocera successfully. It’s working great!
