Changed PSU and no signal to display

I'm planning to add an old graphics card to this computer so I needed a better PSU with PCI-E connectors.  I installed the Thermaltake Smart 700W and the display doesn't receive a signal. I reconnected the factory HP PSU and the display receives a signal. I tested the new Thermaltake PSU in a different PC and it powered on fine.  Tried it again in the HP Envy and still no signal received at the display.  How does that make sense?  Any solutions?

I've heard the HP might change the pins on the motherboard and oem PSU so that 3rd party psu's don't work.  Is that true?

Hi,

 

Trying the Thermaltake PSU in a different PC was a good troubleshooting technique. You now know the new PSU works.

 

The HP MB looks to have standard 24 pin MB power connection and a standard four pin CPU power connection.

 

I would also conclude HP has modified something if the PC will not power on.

 

One other issue would be the old graphics card. Did you install this card when testing the new PSU? Your PC has a UEFI BIOS.

 

Old graphics cards may not work if they don't support UEFI. Or you have to disable Secure boot and enable Legacy support in the BIOS (Link) before installing the card if the card supports UEFI.

Thanks.  The GPU doesn't support UEFI.  I've tried disabling secure boot, but still not able to get it to work.  I thought this would be an easy upgrade, but now thinking I'll have to buy a cheap new mobo and GPU.
