Hi, our HP computer is showing a “Boot Device Not Found – Hard Disk (3F0)” error. I ran the HP diagnostics and the hard drive passed, and the BIOS still shows “OS Boot Manager,” but it won’t boot into Windows. Could someone help us repair the boot files or recover the system?

Hi @Sophia72928,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how it must feel to see that Boot Device Not Found (3F0) error even though the diagnostics say your hard drive is healthy.

Thank you for already running the HP diagnostics  that’s a great first step.

Could you please share the exact HP model number of your computer ?

Here are a few  steps you can try :

  1. Check BIOS boot order Restart the computer, press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS, and confirm that “OS Boot Manager” or your hard drive is listed first in the boot sequence.
  2. Run Startup Repair If you have a Windows recovery USB, boot from it and choose Repair your computer → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair. This can rebuild missing boot files.
  3. Use Command Prompt recovery From the recovery environment, open Command Prompt and run:

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /scanos

bootrec /rebuildbcd

These commands repair the boot configuration.

  • Check Secure Boot settings In BIOS, toggle Secure Boot off/on to see if it helps the system recognize the boot manager.
  • System Recovery If Windows repair doesn’t work, HP’s built‑in recovery can restore the OS while keeping your files (depending on the option you choose).

(Ensure data is backed up before performing the above steps)

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
