HP ProDesk 400 G6 Desktop Mini PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am having an issue with several HP ProDesk 400 G6 Mini. The computer won't fully go to sleep or shutdown. The power light will stay solid and the fan will still spin. I've been looking into this particular issue for about a few weeks. I found a fresh install usually fixes the issue, but in my case I have potentially 30 computers with this same issue so re-installing Windows isn't a solution I would like to do, considering people are using those computers.

Here are some more details:

  • Drivers
    • I've basically updating and re-installing every driver at this point
    • Ensured on the NIC drivers the "Allow this device to wake the computer" was turned off
  • BIOS
    • BIOS and Intel Management Engine are updated.
    • Enabling the keyboard option in the BIOS is also enabled
  • Power Settings
    • Hibernation is disabled as well as Hybrid Sleep
    • Power setting is set to High Performance Mode

I imaged these computers using a Windows Deployment Server (WDS) and the same image on other HP computers (including the last Gen of the same machine) do not exabit this behavior.

Maybe there is something obvious that I'm missing here so I welcome any suggestions.

You might look through the event logs and see if some app or system service is vetoing shutdown or sleep.  It is likely the display has shut down and cannot display a message identify the application.

Another possibility is a USB device not allowing sleep but that should also show up in the event logs.

Thanks for the reply BeemerBiker.

I've checked the Event Viewer it it goes to sleep and wakes up successfully. I'm also not seeing any logs from USB devices that say they are preventing sleep. Just to be safe, I set the power button to set the computer to sleep and unplugged the keyboard and mouse as well.

It might be useful to verify the sleep state.  You can enable the Sleep  State Blink rates in BIOS and then

verify it is in the correct state.  From page 72 of maintenance guide

There might be differences in motherboards.  California has regulations regarding sleep and power consumed during sleep.  Possibly the motherboards that are working are "ok" for California.  Not more than 1.2 watt is supposed to be consumed..  If in California you might want complain to HP.

[edit] My "california" opinion is worth 0.02c

Hmm, interesting. I'll have to look into that. But based on your screen capture the power light is marked as S0 "On" when sending to sleep.

Unfortunately I am not in California so their regulation's don't apply to me.

So, I've been investigating sleep states. I've noticed whenever I tell the system to sleep. It attempts to enter an S4 state which is the hibernation state.

This appears to have the consequence of causing a "Abnormal Shutdown" when hibernation is disabled. When hibernation is enabled It "successfully" enters sleep and exists, likely due to the hybrid sleep feature using hibernation.

I'm gonna keep doing some testing and see what I come up with.
