I have a desktop computer bought from Amazon with no labels for serial number or anything. On the front it says HP PRODESK.

if I turn it off it takes forever to start. Right now it is showing a black screen with the hp logo and the message ‘preparing automatic repair’.

it has been in this state for 2 hours.

Can anyone help me?

Welcome to the HP Forum.

Is this a recent purchase and is there any warranty on the PC? Did this happen immediately after purchase or did the PC work okay for a while?

It would be good if you could provide a specific HP ProDesk model number. What Windows version is running on your PC?

The PC may have: a hardware problem, most likely a failing system drive, or Windows system files are corrupted.

First check your PC's hardware (if possible) using HP Diagnostics as follows:

Start the PC. Repeatedly tap the "ESC" key.

Select "F2". Run extensive system and component tests to confirm: a drive problem, a memory problem, or other component problem.

Let the Forum know how it goes.

Fixing corrupt Windows system files can sometimes be a rabbit hole. All recovery steps often fail resulting in doing a new Windows installation.

It is often easier to back up data on the system disk. Then do a HP Cloud Recovery if the PC qualifies. Or do a clean Windows installation if you can't do a HP Cloud Recovery.

Thank you so much for the great advice. After I posted, the computer came back to life, and I am a little nervous about shutting it down again. I have copied your reply and will work through all the steps in a few days.

Just to answer your question, the computer is 9 months old and apparently has no warranty. It came from Amazon as 'refurbished.'

My pleasure.

Okay, so you have had this PC for a while. This problem is recent.

Check hardware when you have time.

You might have to replace the system disk if it is failing.

You can check to see if your PC qualifies for a HP Cloud Recovery at this HP Site.

HP Cloud Recovery info can be reviewed at this HP Site.

Get back to the Forum if you need additional assistance.

Forgot to add the following:

You should back up data to external media ASAP while you can use Windows.
