The computer won’t switch on. The power supply looks visually ok, I’ve tried a different cable to the adapter- no luck. Tried different socket- no luck. Does a new adapter need to be 120w or will 90w do? Trying to find replacement ad

Hi @Mholder,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Pavilion 24-Xa All-In-One Desktop PC is not powering on despite trying different power cables and sockets, there could be various reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem.
-
Check Power Source:
- Make sure the power outlet is working by testing it with another device.
- Try plugging the computer into a different power outlet.
-
Inspect Power Supply:
- Even though the power supply looks visually okay, there might still be an issue. Check for any signs of damage such as frayed wires or bent connectors.
- If possible, try using the power supply with another compatible device to see if it works.
-
Adapter Wattage:
- It's generally recommended to use the original power adapter that came with the computer. Using an adapter with a lower wattage might not provide enough power for the system to turn on.
- In your case, if the original adapter was 120W, it's advisable to use a replacement adapter with the same or higher wattage. Using a 90W adapter might not provide sufficient power for the system.
-
Check for Physical Damage:
- Inspect the power port on the computer for any signs of damage.
- Ensure that there are no loose connections or debris in the power port.
-
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn off the computer, disconnect all peripherals, and unplug the power cable.
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reconnect the power cable and try turning on the computer.
-
Test with Minimal Hardware:
- Disconnect all peripherals and remove any unnecessary hardware components (such as additional RAM or expansion cards).
- Try turning on the computer with the bare minimum hardware connected.
If you've gone through these steps and the computer still doesn't power on, it may indicate a more serious hardware issue,
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Unfortunately the reply wasn’t helpful. Basically cut and paste advice from HP website - I have tried different sockets, sockets work fine. I have checked for frayed cables etc, that’s what my visual inspection, that I stated I’d done, would have covered. The computer doesn’t switch on, the only part of Alden4’s reply which was mildly helpful was the wattage being the same on a replacement cable.
