When I try to turn my computer on the power button will come on after a certain amount of time but the desktop its self won’t turn on. After I let go of the power button the power button light immediately goes off. I don’t know what to do

Hi @Lexie32

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing what’s happening—I’m really sorry your desktop won’t power on properly. It’s incredibly frustrating when the power button lights up but the system itself doesn’t respond.

You’ve done the right thing by reaching out, and I’ll guide you through a clean, hardware-level recovery sequence to help bring it back to life.

Step-by-Step: Recover HP Desktop That Won’t Power On

1. Perform a Power Drain Reset

This clears any residual charge and resets the power delivery.

  • Disconnect the power cable from the desktop and wall outlet.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Release the button and wait 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cable directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Press the Power button once and observe the response.

If the power light flickers or briefly turns on, continue to the next step.

2. Check for Signs of Life

  • Listen for fan noise, drive spin, or any beeps.
  • Watch for any flicker on the screen or keyboard backlight.
  • If nothing happens, try a different wall outlet or power cable (if available).

3. Reseat RAM and Power Connectors (If Comfortable Opening Case)

If you’re comfortable accessing the internals:

  • Disconnect power and remove the side panel.
  • Carefully remove and reinsert the RAM modules.
  • Check that the 24-pin motherboard power connector and CPU power connector are fully seated.
  • Reassemble and try powering on again.

Loose connections can prevent startup even if the power button lights up.

4. Disconnect All Peripherals

  • Unplug everything except the power cable—no keyboard, mouse, monitor, or USB devices.
  • Try powering on with just the bare system.
  • If it starts, reconnect devices one at a time to isolate the issue.

5. Check for CMOS Battery Issues

If the system is older:

  • Remove the CMOS battery (silver coin cell) for 5 minutes.
  • Reinsert it and try powering on again.

This resets BIOS settings and may resolve startup lockups.

Let me know what the desktop does after the power drain and reseating steps—especially if you hear any fan activity or see a flicker. You’ve been incredibly patient, and I’ll guide you further based on what you observe. You deserve a smooth recovery—and I’m here to help you get there.
