Hi @YadaUada,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for reporting that. A "disk read error" on your HP desktop usually means the system is having trouble accessing your hard drive during startup. This can be caused by: A loose or failing hard drive, Corrupted boot files, BIOS misconfiguration or Power or cable issues>

Step-by-Step Fix for Disk Read Error

1. Power Cycle Your PC

  1. Turn off your desktop completely.
  2. Unplug the power cable.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug it back in and turn it on.

2. Check BIOS Settings

  1. Turn on the PC and immediately press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  2. Go to Boot Options.
  3. Ensure your hard drive is listed as the first boot device.
  4. Save and exit.

3. Run HP Diagnostics

If you can access BIOS:

  • Go to Diagnostics > Hard Drive Test.
  • Run a Quick Test and then an Extended Test.

4. Use Windows Recovery Tools

If you have a Windows 11 recovery USB:

  1. Boot from the USB.
  2. Go to Advanced Options > Command Prompt.
  3. Run:  chkdsk C: /f /r
                bootrec /fixmbr
                bootrec /fixboot
                bootrec /scanos
                bootrec /rebuildbcd

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
