Welcome to our HP Community forum!
Yes, the HP Z8 G4 Workstation supports a wide range of storage options, including U.2 NVMe SSDs, SATA, and SAS drives, but with some key considerations:
1. U.2 NVMe SSD Support:
- The Z8 G4 can support U.2 NVMe SSDs, but you will need a PCIe adapter or an M.2-to-U.2 converter.
- Recommended adapter: HP Dual M.2 to PCIe x8 SSD Adapter (Amazon Link)
- Maximum capacity depends on the SSD, but high-end U.2 SSDs go up to 16TB (e.g., Samsung PM1733).
2. U.3 NVMe SSD Compatibility:
- U.3 SSDs are backward compatible with U.2, but ensure your PCIe adapter or backplane supports PCIe Gen4 for maximum performance.
3. SATA SSD & HDD Support:
- The workstation includes SATA 6Gb/s ports for 2.5" and 3.5" drives.
- No fixed maximum capacity—enterprise SATA SSDs can go up to 16TB (e.g., Micron 5210 ION).
4. SAS HDD & SSD Support:
- The Z8 G4 can support SAS drives, but a dedicated SAS controller is required.
- Recommended option: HP Smart Array or LSI SAS RAID controller
- Example: HP 8-Channel Storage Controller (RAID) with SAS 12Gb/s support (Amazon Link)
- Max capacity per SAS drive: Up to 16TB depending on the RAID controller.
Installation & Configuration Tips:
- If using M.2-to-U.2 adapters, ensure they are PCIe Gen3/Gen4 compatible.
- To install an M.2 SSD adapter, refer to HP’s official tutorial: HP Z8 G4 Workstation – Installing M.2 SSD Adapter.
- If using RAID, HP’s RAID management software can help with setup: HP Z8 G4 RAID Configuration Guide.
Kind Regards,
