I usually don't. I turned my computer off, but I turned it off, and now I need a password to get back in and I don't know what it is

Hi @Bobe10

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If your HP computer is suddenly asking for a password and you don’t normally use one, here’s what may have happened and how you can fix it:

What Likely Happened

You may have accidentally signed out of a Microsoft account or set a password recently

If it was in Sleep or Hibernate mode before, it might have skipped the login screen until now

A Windows update or restart can sometimes re-enable the login requirement

Step-by-Step: What to Try

1. Check for Other Accounts

At the login screen:

Look in the bottom-left corner for multiple user icons

Try clicking a different user name (e.g., "Administrator" or your name without a Microsoft email)

Try logging in with no password (just press Enter)

2. Try Common Password Options

If you or someone else set a password in the past, try:

Passwords you often use elsewhere

Just pressing Enter (if no password was ever set)

If using a Microsoft account, try that email password

3. Use Password Reset Options

If it’s a Microsoft account login, and you're connected to Wi-Fi:

Click "I forgot my password" on the login screen

Follow the on-screen steps to reset via email or phone code

>>This only works for Microsoft accounts (like yourname@outlook.com, @hotmail.com, etc.)

4. Try Safe Mode or Local Admin (Advanced)

If the above doesn't work:

Hold Shift and click Restart (on the login screen)

Choose:
Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart

After restart, press 4 to enter Safe Mode

Sometimes this lets you log in without a password if the local admin account is accessible.

5. Still Locked Out? Try a Password Reset Disk or Reinstall (Last Resort)

If none of the above works:

You can reset the PC completely (but you’ll lose local files):

From login screen:
Hold Shift > Restart > Troubleshoot > Reset this PC

Choose “Remove everything” if you’re okay starting over

For further assistance let me know:

Does your login screen show your email address?

Do you remember ever setting a password?

Is your PC connected to Wi-Fi at the login screen?

I’ll guide you based on your situation.
