HP EliteDesk 800 35W G4 Base Model Desktop Mini PC
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi there,

We have recently purchased a refurbished HP EliteDesk with Windows 11, and all is working well. The only issue however is that once the computer sleeps/is put in sleep mode, after an extended sleep there is no way to wake it up from sleep unless I restart it via the power button.

I have tried all the suggested troubleshooting options such as power plan settings, device manager settings, BIOS settings, and driver updates. I have even purchased a new keyboard & mouse combo (HP 330 wireless mouse/keyboard combo) as I thought our old keyboard may be the issue, but it's made no difference. Other USB devices connected to the PC still seem to have power via USB when the computer is sleeping but the keyboard/mouse simply don't wake the computer. Trying different USB ports has also made no difference.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Kindest Regards,

Chris J.

Hi @CJ1884,

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue with your HP EliteDesk. Since you've tried various troubleshooting steps already, here are a few additional suggestions you might consider:

  1. Check for USB Power Settings:

    • Go to Device Manager.
    • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    • For each entry that mentions "USB Root Hub," right-click and choose Properties.
    • Under the Power Management tab, ensure that "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked.
  2. Update Chipset Drivers:

    • Make sure you have installed the latest chipset drivers from the HP Support website or the manufacturer's site. This can help address any underlying issues with power management and device wake functions.
  3. BIOS Settings:

    • Double-check BIOS settings for any specific power management settings that could affect wake-up behavior. Sometimes, there are specific options related to USB devices waking up the computer.
  4. Windows Fast Startup:

    • Consider disabling Fast Startup, which can sometimes interfere with sleep and wake functions.
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power button does.
    • Click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable."
    • Under the "Shutdown settings," uncheck the box for "Turn on fast startup" and save changes.
  5. Check Event Viewer:

    • Look at the Event Viewer logs to see if there are any errors or warnings related to power management or sleep/wake functionality.
  6. Test on AC Power:

    • If your device is on battery power, test the sleep function with the device plugged into AC power to see if there is any improvement.
  7. Windows Updates:

    • Ensure that all Windows updates have been applied, as there might be specific updates that address power management issues.

I'm an HP Employee.

Microsoft has always had issues with sleep/hibernation in their OS releases this is mostly due to the wide range of hardware available fo the OS's and the OS itself having bugs with this

when a system fails to resume from either state it is usually due to either a bad 3rd party driver or a user installed software that has a memory leak which consumes all free ram causing the os to crash while in sleep/hibernation

you can try looking at the windows OS log files which might have some information on what caused the crash

look in Event Viewer > System. (Windows logs). Look at all logfiles for  possible issues

or backup your data, do a OS reinstall install all necessary MS updates, (no user drivers or software) then snapshot that image and then test sleep/hibernation and if good install some 3rd party hardware drivers  and again  reboot and test sleep/hibernation if good snapshot again and then add more 3rd party drivers till all are installed and the system will sleep/hibernate

then start on the user software, at some point it may start having a problem you can then look at the last batch of installed driver or software and narrow down which is the one that breaks sleep/hibernation
