@LA-CTapar -- it was stuck at the black screen with binking cursor in the top
That could be a symptom of a failing disk-drive.
When you power-on your HP computer, do you get an option to run the HP Hardware Diagnostics?
When you run the "short DST" (a minute or two of time to run the Drive Status Test), do you get a "pass" or a "fail" ?
If you get a "fail", then DO NOT run the "long" (a few hours) DST -- it will not give you any more information, and it may make it much more different to "recover" any of your Personal Files from the disk-drive.
I need this laptop for school.
Do you attend a post-secondary school? Does that school have a "Computer Help Desk" with a mandate to help students with their computer issues?
If the laptop is less than 12 months old, exercise the HP Warranty to get it repaired/replaced, at HP's expense. This could take a week or two.
