OMEN 30L Desktop GT13-0000i (1A5Y5AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I downloaded the latest Bios update from HP's website. ( HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 8704))  after ensuring that it's the correct update for my motherboard. I then disabled my antivirus, and then set it to install. However, when it restarted to update the bios it says "The system BIOS update failed. Unable to open BIOS image file".

How do I update the bios from here?

Hi @Kaethae ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are encountering an error like "The system BIOS update failed. Unable to open BIOS image file" can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

  • Ensure Correct BIOS Update: Double-check that you downloaded the correct BIOS update for your specific model of the OMEN 30L Desktop (GT13-0000i) from the official HP website. Using an incorrect BIOS update can cause compatibility issues and may lead to failures.
  • Verify File Integrity: Make sure that the downloaded BIOS update file is not corrupted. Sometimes, downloads can get interrupted or corrupted during the download process. You can try re-downloading the BIOS update file and then attempt the update process again.
  • Check File Format: Ensure that the BIOS update file is in the correct format supported by your motherboard. Typically, BIOS update files are in .bin or .rom format. If the file format is incorrect, you may encounter errors when attempting to update the BIOS.
  • Disable Secure Boot: Sometimes, Secure Boot settings in the BIOS can prevent BIOS updates from being installed. Try disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS settings before attempting to update the BIOS again.
  • Run as Administrator: Right-click on the BIOS update executable file and select "Run as administrator" to ensure that the update process has the necessary permissions to access system files and perform the update.
  • Check Storage Space: Ensure that you have enough free space on your system drive (usually C:) where the BIOS update utility is attempting to extract and install the BIOS update files.
  • Update BIOS Using USB Flash Drive: If the above steps don't work, you can try updating the BIOS using a USB flash drive. Download the BIOS update file from HP's website and follow the instructions provided by HP for creating a bootable USB drive and updating the BIOS using the USB drive.
