My HP laptop displays the following error during startup:
“HP Endpoint Security Controller Problem – There is a problem with the HP Endpoint Security Controller on the unit. Please contact HP Inc. to have the unit serviced.”
The message appears before Windows starts and requires me to press OK/Enter before proceeding. I have entered the BIOS/UEFI settings and would like assistance determining whether this is a BIOS/firmware issue or a hardware problem involving the HP Endpoint Security Controller.
Please advise me on how to fix it.

Hi @DDAVOU,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
The “HP Endpoint Security Controller Problem” message appears during the startup/POST stage, before Windows loads. This means the issue is not likely to be caused by Windows 11 itself.
Please try the following:
- Check the current BIOS version
- Turn on the notebook and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.
- Note the BIOS version and date shown on the main screen.
- Run HP UEFI hardware diagnostics
- Restart the notebook and press Esc repeatedly.
- Select F2 – System Diagnostics.
- Run the available System Board test.
- If a test reports a Failure ID, note the complete code.
- Check for the latest BIOS specifically for your EliteBook 840 G6
- Use HP's official EliteBook 840 G6 Software and Drivers page and select your exact product number and Windows version.
- If a newer BIOS is available, install it with the AC adapter connected and without interrupting the update.
- If the Endpoint Security Controller error remains after the BIOS is current, especially if it appears every time the system starts, this should be treated as a firmware/hardware-level issue rather than a Windows software problem.
Also, because the EliteBook 840 G6 is a business notebook, HP Sure Start is relevant to BIOS/firmware protection. HP states that systems with Sure Start use an isolated backup copy of the BIOS/firmware for automatic recovery, and manual BIOS recovery methods such as Windows + B are not supported on Sure Start systems.
Please share the BIOS version/date, exact product number, and the result of the System Board diagnostic. With those details, we can determine whether this is primarily a BIOS/firmware issue or whether the Endpoint Security Controller requires service.
Best regards,
