Hi @DeathBecomesYou,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Random freezing on a PC can be a challenging issue to diagnose because it can stem from a variety of hardware or software problems. Since you've already done a lot of the preliminary work, let's look at some additional steps to pinpoint and potentially resolve the issue.
Potential Causes and Solutions
Hardware Issues:
- RAM: Faulty RAM can cause random freezes. Run a comprehensive memory test .Let it run for several passes to thoroughly check your RAM.
- Storage Drive: Even if the storage tests pass, a failing HDD or SSD can still cause freezes.
- Power Supply: An unstable power supply can cause freezing. If possible, try using a different power adapter or ensure that your current one is functioning properly.
Software and Configuration Issues:
- Corrupt System Files: Use the System File Checker tool. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run sfc /scannow.
- Driver Conflicts: Sometimes the latest drivers can still cause issues. Try rolling back recent driver updates to see if that resolves the issue.
- Background Programs: Disable unnecessary startup programs and services to see if they are causing conflicts. Use msconfig to do this.
- BIOS/UEFI Settings: Even though you can't reset Windows from the BIOS, ensure that your BIOS is updated to the latest version and check for any unusual settings.
Advanced Troubleshooting:
- Event Viewer: Check Windows Event Viewer for any critical errors or warnings that occur around the time of the freezes. This can provide clues about the root cause.
- Safe Mode: Boot into Safe Mode and see if the issue persists. If the freezing stops, it's likely a software or driver issue.
- Clean Boot: Perform a clean boot to eliminate software conflicts. This involves disabling all non-Microsoft services and startup programs, then gradually re-enabling them to isolate the cause.
- Create a New User Profile: Sometimes user profile corruption can cause issues. Create a new user account and see if the problem persists when logged into the new account.
If this does not solve, you may try a system restore: : https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/ish_2026000-1498532-16
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
