HP Pavilion - 15-cc749tx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi. I have got a black screen with caps lock light giving 5 long and 3 short blinks.  I tried to reattach RAM and M.2 SATA disk, but it was in vain. In fact, the same 5 long and 3 short blinks go even without RAM and the disk attached. Is there something I can do to restore the notebook? I suspect BIOS was corrupted somehow.

I tried to keep "Win+B" combination before and after Powering to restore BIOS. It did not help.

Are there any other special procedures to restore the BIOS and return this nice notebook to life?

Hi @Ivan_AU ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the 5 long and 3 short blinks on your HP Pavilion 15 laptop indicates a BIOS corruption issue, and it seems that the standard recovery methods (like pressing "Win+B" with the power on) haven't worked.

Here are some additional steps you can try to restore the BIOS:

1. Reset the BIOS using a USB Flash Drive

  • Prepare a USB flash drive (at least 8GB) formatted to FAT32.
  • Download the latest BIOS update for your HP Pavilion 15 from the HP Support website (enter your model number).
  • On the HP Support page, go to Drivers & Downloads, select the BIOS update, and download it to your computer.
  • Extract the BIOS update onto the USB drive.
  • Power off the laptop completely.
  • Insert the USB flash drive into the laptop.
  • Hold Windows key + B (this may differ depending on the model) and then press the Power button. Keep holding the keys for about 30 seconds.
  • The laptop should attempt to recover the BIOS from the USB drive.

2. Use HP's BIOS Recovery (if available)

Some HP models have a dedicated BIOS recovery feature that can be triggered by pressing a certain key combination during boot.

  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • Hold Windows + B and press the Power button.
  • Release the Power button but keep holding the Windows and B keys.
  • The recovery process should start, and the BIOS should begin to restore.

3. Perform a Hard Reset

If you haven't tried this already, it's worth resetting the system:

  • Power off the laptop and unplug any peripherals (USB devices, external monitors, etc.).
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if possible).
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15-30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter and try to turn the laptop back on.

4. Try a BIOS Recovery Jumper

If the above methods do not work, your laptop may have a BIOS recovery jumper. This jumper can be used to reset the BIOS settings, but it requires opening the laptop and locating the jumper on the motherboard. This can be tricky, so I would recommend checking the service manual for your specific HP Pavilion 15 model to find the exact location.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Gaya1239,
thank you for your informative response.  I have tried all methods that you mentioned except the recovery jumper option, as it seems that there is no such a jumper  on the laptop (Pavilion 15 CC-749TX, a model without CMOS battery). All my attempts were in vain, unfortunately.
