HP Pavilion 550-153na Desktop on Windows 10.

The CMOS battery died & I replaced it, but it’s still unable to find the boot device .

I’ve performed an Extensive Test and all is well.

I have lots of files stored on it which I don’t want to lose.

My system is fully wired.

Can anyone help me please?

Thank you.

@CC7997,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

The 3F0 error usually means the PC cannot detect the drive after the CMOS battery reset.

Your files are most likely still intact -the good news is that this is usually a configuration issue, not automatic data loss.

Below are the steps that typically fix this on the Pavilion 550 series.

1. Enter BIOS and check whether the hard drive is detected:

  1. Turn off the PC.

  2. Power it on and immediately tap-tap-tap F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS Setup.

  3. Look under:

    • StorageDevice Configuration, or

    • System Information

If the drive (HDD or SSD) shows up with its model number → good!

If it shows "None", "Not installed", or the list is empty → the drive is not being detected, obviously.

If the drive is not detected, skip to section 4.

2. After CMOS replacement, re-enable UEFI boot settings:

Replacing the CMOS battery resets BIOS settings to default. Many Pavilion 550 systems originally shipped with UEFI enabled and Legacy disabled.

Assuming you can access BIOS do the following:

  1. Load Setup Defaults

    • Press F9, then Yes

  2. Under Storage / Boot Options

    • Ensure UEFI Boot = Enabled

    • Ensure Legacy Boot = Disabled

  3. Check the Boot Order

    • "OS Boot Manager" (Windows Boot Manager) should be at the top.

  4. Press F10 to save and reboot.

If the boot order got wiped, the system no longer knows where Windows is located — causing the 3F0 error.

Restoring defaults often fixes this.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (important):

To rule out a failing hard drive:

  1. Turn off PC

  2. Power on and tap F2

  3. Run System Tests → Storage → Quick Test

  4. If it passes, run the Extensive Test

If the drive fails, then it is physically failing — but your data may still be recoverable.

4. If BIOS does NOT detect the drive at all:

This usually means:

  • The SATA data cable is loose

  • The SATA power cable is loose

  • The drive has died (mechanically or electronically)

Do this:

  1. Unplug the PC

  2. Open the side panel

  3. Reseat:

    • SATA data cable (both ends: drive + motherboard)

    • SATA power cable

  4. Power on again and check detection

SATA connectors often get disturbed during CMOS battery replacement.

5. Your data is probably safe:

The CMOS battery dying does not wipe data.

Even if Windows is not booting:

  • The drive can usually still be read in another PC

  • You can use a USB-to-SATA adapter to recover files from your primary (boot) drive in another PC

  • Worst case: professional data recovery

If you can, please reply with:

  • Whether the BIOS detects the hard drive

  • The result of the HP Storage Diagnostics

With that information, I can guide you to the correct next step.

Kind Regards,
