I have had my desktop (HP Pavilion 570-P030) for a while, and have loved it. I was using it as recently as Friday morning, and decided to reboot it (I'd had it up for a couple of days, and wanted to play a game that was a bit memory intensive so I thought I'd give it a fresh start). However, when I rebooted it, it could not detect the HDD.
I've been a PC tech for a while, and so I did all the standard stuff (power drained, reseated cables, verified the BIOS was set to look for it, ran the HP system diagnostics, etc.) and it's all fine, except that it is convinced suddenly that is has no HDD. Any ideas? I am of course behind on backups, and this is a 1TB drive, so if I lost the data it would be horrific.

Hi @Cassiopia1177,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Pavilion 570-P030 suddenly cannot detect the HDD (Hard Disk Drive), it could be due to several reasons. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to identify and potentially resolve the issue.
- Check Connections: Ensure that all cables connecting the HDD to the motherboard are securely plugged in. Sometimes loose connections can cause detection issues.
- BIOS Settings: Access the BIOS/UEFI settings on your computer and check if the HDD is recognized there. If it's not, there might be a hardware problem. To access the BIOS, restart your computer and press the appropriate key (usually F2, F12, Delete, or Esc) during startup. Navigate to the "Storage" or "Advanced" section to see if the HDD is listed.
- Try a Different SATA Port or Cable: If you have additional SATA ports on your motherboard, try connecting the HDD to a different port. You can also replace the SATA cable with a new one to rule out cable issues.
- Check Power Supply: Ensure that the power connector from the power supply unit to the HDD is firmly connected.
- Listen for Unusual Sounds: Sometimes, strange noises coming from the HDD can indicate a mechanical failure. If you hear clicking or grinding noises, the HDD might be failing, and you should back up your data immediately.
- Data Recovery: If the HDD is not detected but you suspect there might be valuable data on it, consider using a different computer or a USB SATA adapter to see if you can access the drive. If you can, back up your data immediately.
- Check for BIOS Updates: Check if there are any BIOS updates available for your motherboard. Sometimes, updating the BIOS can resolve hardware detection issues.
- Test with Another HDD: If you have another working HDD, try connecting it to your computer to see if it gets detected. This can help determine if the issue lies with the HDD or the computer's hardware.
- Check for HDD Failure: If none of the above steps work and the HDD is not detected on other systems either, it's possible that the HDD has failed. You may need to replace it with a new one.
Remember to back up your important data regularly to avoid data loss in case of hardware failures. Hard drives can fail over time, so it's essential to have backups to prevent data loss.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
