HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop 690-0024
Microsoft Windows 11

I was recently given an HP Pavilion 690-0083w by my friend. My friend was able to boot it up at his house, but when I took it back to my house, the problem made itself apparent. He got it from a client of his, so it would be difficult to track down other people to talk to about this problem. Speaking of the problem, the computer turns on immediately after being plugged in, as in, I do not have to press the power button. The front green LEDs also turn on and so do all three fans. The computer, however, refuses to connect to a monitor or properly boot, I am still unsure exactly what is causing the problem, but the computer is unusable in this state. On top of all of that, I attempted to turn it off via power button, and that also does not work, the only way to shut it down is to unplug the computer as a whole. I have attempted using multiple different monitors when I was under the impression that it was a monitor issue, but have concluded that this is likely not the case. All cable are plugged into the right place as well. Has anyone else experienced this problem or does anyone have a solution? If so, that would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @RebelLeaf,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your HP Pavilion 690-0083w. From your description, it seems like the computer is automatically powering on when plugged in, not responding to the power button, and failing to properly boot or connect to a monitor.

Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

  • Check the Power Button: Since the computer is turning on automatically when plugged in, it's possible that there's an issue with the power button or its connection to the motherboard. Try disconnecting the power button from the motherboard and see if the computer still powers on automatically when plugged in.
  • Reset CMOS: Resetting the CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) settings can sometimes resolve boot issues. To reset the CMOS, locate the CMOS battery on the motherboard (it's a small silver coin-shaped battery), remove it for a few minutes, and then reinsert it. This will reset the BIOS settings to their default configuration.
  • Check for Loose Connections: Ensure that all internal components, such as RAM, graphics card (if applicable), and cables, are properly seated and securely connected to the motherboard.
  • Test with Minimal Hardware: Disconnect all unnecessary peripherals and components (such as extra RAM sticks, additional hard drives, etc.) and try booting the computer with only the essential components (CPU, one RAM stick, power supply, and motherboard).
  • Inspect for Physical Damage: Check for any signs of physical damage to the motherboard, CPU, or other components. Look for burnt areas, bulging capacitors, or any other abnormalities.
  • Update BIOS: If possible, try updating the BIOS to the latest version. Sometimes, BIOS updates can resolve compatibility issues and improve system stability.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your suggestions, I had not tried a CMOS reset yet, but unfortunately, upon trying that, it still did not work. I believe it to be a motherboard issue. I don't see any damage, but I guess that doesn't mean that there isn't any. Thanks anyways though.
