HP Stream Laptop (8PF05AV)

Hello, I have a HP Stream Laptop. Everything has been fine except for the low disk space issues had but a couple days ago I've run into a huge problem.

After a software update, apps would not open when clicked on. I assumed it needed to restart and opened the windows menu, the restart button would not work when clicked on either so I did a force shutdown by holding down the power button. I tried to turn it back on and the screen flickered for maybe half a second before going black again, I tried it a couple times and the same thing so I left it on the charger overnight just in case the power drained. That next morning I looked up what to do, a reply from a comment on this community said to open the BIOS menu and reset the restart settings to default. I did that and it still won't turn on with the same flashing screen. I tried to open the BIOS menu again but now that won't open either. I'm at a loss and I don't know what to do, please help!

Hi @Emily206,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Stream laptop has a flickering screen but won't turn on, it could be due to a variety of hardware or software issues. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

Check the Power Source:

  • Ensure that your laptop is connected to a working power source and the charger is functioning correctly.
  • Try a different power outlet and charger if available.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the laptop from the charger.
  • Remove the battery, if possible (not all laptops have removable batteries).
  • Hold down the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery (if removed) and plug in the charger.
  • Try turning on the laptop again.

External Monitor Test:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable.
  • If the external monitor displays a stable image while your laptop screen is flickering, it may indicate a problem with the laptop's display or graphics driver.

Boot in Safe Mode:

  • If the laptop partially turns on, try booting into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key repeatedly during startup (this may vary depending on your laptop model).
  • Safe Mode loads only essential drivers and can help identify if a third-party software or driver is causing the flickering issue.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • If you can access Safe Mode or the laptop partially turns on, update your graphics drivers to the latest version. Visit the HP website to download the latest drivers for your specific laptop model.

Hardware Issues:

  • If the flickering continues and you suspect a hardware problem, it might be a faulty graphics card, display cable, or screen.

BIOS Update:

  • Check if there are any BIOS updates available for your laptop on the HP support website. Sometimes, a BIOS update can resolve hardware-related issues.

System Restore (Windows Only):

  • If the flickering started after a recent software change or update, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a previous working state.

Remember to back up your important data if possible before attempting any major troubleshooting steps, as some actions may result in data loss.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
