I just went on Google and typed "computer restarts when waking from sleep" and was surprised to see that this is quite a common problem. After reading quite a few comments on other forums, it seems that the general consensus is that this is a Windows 10 issue. Some users reported the problem disappearing after a Windows update. Other causes were listed as bad drivers or incorrect BIOS settings, (and I think we can safely say it does not appear to be BIOS related in the Z820). It may be worthwhile investigating the Google responses to see if anyone found a fix for this.

Here's one last thing to try on your Z820. Can you please confirm that you have the 'Fast Boot' option disabled in the BIOS. e.g.

I read on the web that disabling Fast Boot in the BIOS resolved the problem of waking from sleep for some Windows users.

Hi, apologies for delayed response.

The fast boot is disabled in the bios and still not joy.

I did manage to move the boot sector (System Reserved area) to the SSD so that it no longer needs to use the old HD in order to boot up so that's 1 result.

I cant help thinking that the SSD may be powering off when the pc is put to sleep as the USB ports are definitely powered down no matter what settings I use (bios and windows). This is not like my Z240 workstation which  leaves the USB ports on when put to sleep.

I think I will have to keep doing the updates and see if the functionality is restored.

Thanks for your time and help, it is much appreciated.
