Hi @Hunter78,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop is not turning on while connected to an HDMI port, here are a few steps you can try.
- Disconnect HDMI Cable: Sometimes, a connected HDMI cable can interfere with the startup process. Try disconnecting the HDMI cable from both your laptop and the external display.
- Power Cycle: Turn off your laptop completely by holding down the power button for about 10-15 seconds until it shuts down. Then, disconnect the power adapter if it's connected. After a few seconds, reconnect the power adapter and try turning on your laptop again.
- Check Power Adapter: Ensure that your laptop's power adapter is plugged into a working power outlet and securely connected to your laptop. Sometimes, a loose connection can prevent the laptop from powering on.
- Reset Power: If your laptop has a removable battery (not all HP laptops do), you can try removing the battery, pressing and holding the power button for about 30 seconds to drain any residual power, then reinserting the battery and trying to power on again.
- External Display Settings: If your laptop is set to display only on the external monitor (via HDMI), and the monitor is turned off or not properly connected, it might prevent the laptop screen from turning on. Try pressing the appropriate function key (e.g., Fn + F4 or F5) to toggle between display modes.
- Hardware Issues: If none of the above steps work, there might be a hardware issue with your laptop or its power system.
These steps should help you troubleshoot why your HP laptop is not turning on when connected to an HDMI port.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
