I recently received a Pavilion a6720y from my grandfather, It has been his main driver for a few years now.
He has been having problems with it recently and ask me to look at it, basically when you power on the machine it will start to boot then immediately turn itself off, then after a few seconds it will turn itself back on, then turn off again, then finally turn itself on and start booting into windows, but when the Vista startup screen appears the monitor goes black, and the HDD activity light stays on.
I tested to see if it was the HDD by trying to boot to a windows 8.1 installation I had on one of my USB Drives, but the same thing happens.
At this point I really don’t know what to do. Any idea on why the computer is doing this?

Welcome to the forum.
I am not a HP employee.
This PC is pretty old if it came with Windows Vista.
It appears you have some type of hardware problem.
Troubleshooting the bad component (monitor, the monitor data cable, power supply, HDD, RAM, or the motherboard) requires having known good replacement parts to swap in, one at a time. This can get very expensive and may not be cost effective in your situation.
You could have a local PC tech take a look for a reasonable fee.
The solution could be an inexpensive replacement part fix or the MB is in trouble.
If you go DIY, I would start with the monitor, monitor cable, HDD, RAM, and power supply.

Thanks for the advice,
I have tested the HDD SATA cable with a spare one I had with no luck, as well as trying to boot into a Windows 8.1 installation with no luck. I still have not tested the DVI port since I been using VGA, I will see if that makes any difference. If not I will try a different VGA cable, and I do know the Monitor is good since I tested it on a different machine.
