Hi @richarddriscoll,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop is stuck on the loading screen and won't turn on, you can try these troubleshooting steps.
Force Restart: Press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds to force a shutdown. Then press the power button again to turn it back on.
Check Power Supply: Ensure that your laptop is properly connected to a power source and the charger is functioning. Try a different power outlet or charger if available.
Remove External Devices: Disconnect any external devices (USB drives, external hard drives, printers, etc.) and try restarting the laptop.
Boot into Safe Mode:
- Restart the laptop and repeatedly press the F8 or Shift + F8 key as it boots to access Safe Mode.
- If successful, select "Safe Mode" and see if the laptop boots properly. If it does, you might have a software issue that needs resolving.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect the power cord and remove the battery (if it's removable).
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery and power cord, then try turning on the laptop.
Check for Display Issues: If you suspect the issue might be with the display, connect the laptop to an external monitor to see if you get a display there.
Perform BIOS Recovery (if applicable):
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press and hold the Windows key and the B key simultaneously, then press the power button to turn on the laptop while holding these keys.
- Continue holding the keys until you see the BIOS recovery screen.
Run Diagnostics:
- Some HP laptops have built-in diagnostics tools. Turn on the laptop and repeatedly press Esc or F2 to access the diagnostics menu. Run the tests to check for hardware issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
