Product: HP 15-R072nf Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-Bit)
Good morning,
In the PC setup I ask to boot on this device (CD/DVD unit)
"Boot device not found
Please install an operating system on your hard drive
Hard disk (3F0)
F2 system diagnostics". . .
How come a Linux CD (autoboot) is not taken into account?
Bonjour,
Bien cordialement

Avoid using CD. Best Ubuntu install is USB

Good morning,
No, this answer does not correspond to my question:
In any case, on this machine, you cannot "boot" from a CD, whatever the parameters set in the Bios! ! !
You simply have to tell me how to achieve this from a CD (Ubuntu or other "boot" media) using the internal CD or recognized USB physical media! ! !
Thank you for answering this simple question.
Sincerely

It should be easy to "boot" from a recognized device and "bootable" media on HP machines, right ?
Whether on the internal CD/DVD drive or from a CD/DVD drive on a USB port
readable on any computer, under any Operating system ! ! !
Thank you in advance
Alain-Marc

When you create the Linux boot USB or CD you need to match the BIOS and the Partition. If the system uses secure boot you cannot use MBR. If using RUFUS it will download support files that are needed. If not using RUFUS then you may end up with a non bootable USB or CD
Disable secure boot on the laptop and set the boot device to USB or CD. I recommend you remove the SATA hard drive and put in a drive that has all the partitions deleted. This prevents the bios from trying to boot the HDD. If you use a CD or USB watch the LED lights. They will blink when the system is powered up. If you see them blinking a second time and then see the message "no OS found" then you did not create a bootable CD or USB. If they only blink when first powered up then the bios is not set to boot them.
If you get a message that a driver is missing then I recommend you remove the HDD from the laptop, put it in any PC that you have available, and install linux. Then remove and put back in the notebook. This method allows an OS to be put on an HDD when there is no intel RST driver available. Also, when in the BIOS, be sure to enable AHCI and disable RST if that is an option.
I am not sure how old your laptop is. If new, then enable UEFI and GPT in RUFUS.
