I have an HP slim desktop. I turned it on today and I get a solid yellow light. Nothing else comes on. I’m not sure what to do.

Hi @Eharting

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

A solid yellow light on your HP slim desktop typically indicates a hardware issue. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Step 1: Power Reset

  1. Turn off the computer and disconnect all external devices (mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc.).
  2. Unplug the power cable from the computer.
  3. Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cable and external devices.
  5. Turn on the computer and check if it boots up.

Step 2: Check for Overheating

  1. Ensure that the computer is placed in a well-ventilated area.
  2. Verify that all cooling vents are unobstructed.
  3. If possible, open the side panel of the computer and check if the internal fans are running.

Step 3: Verify Hardware Connections

  1. Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cable.
  2. Open the side panel of the computer.
  3. Check all internal connections:
    • Ensure that the RAM modules are securely inserted.
    • Verify that the hard drive cables are connected properly.
    • Make sure other internal cables are not loose or disconnected.
  4. Reconnect the side panel, plug in the power cable, and turn on the computer.

Step 4: Test RAM Modules

  1. Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cable.
  2. Open the side panel of the computer.
  3. Remove the RAM modules from the motherboard.
  4. Insert one RAM module at a time back into the slots, ensuring they are seated firmly.
  5. Reconnect the side panel, plug in the power cable, and turn on the computer to test each module individually.

Step 5: External Display Test

  1. Connect the computer to an external monitor using a compatible cable.
  2. Turn on the computer and check if there is any display.
