We would like to look inside the computer to see if, as you suggest, any of the connections are not tight and to check whether the drive is not receiving any electrical power.
I have tried to find how to do this on this support web site but it does not seem to be included.
we have put the drive in an external case to try to locate it on another computer and will let you know the result.
Hopefully, I will not have to bother you again after this as we will either find the answer or abandon the computer!

You must have disconnected both the "power" connector and the "data" connector from the disk-drive, before you physically removed it from the computer. Did you follow some instructions on how to make such disconnections, or did you just "wing it" ???
Trace the "data" cable down to the motherboard, to see if that connection feels "firm".

I found the web site for opening up the computer at https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c04100400. I had to use this video as the cover matched that of our HP.
Very happy to report that having checked the connections over, the drive is now installed and we are up and running perfectly.
We appreciate all your help and interest in our problem and are glad that you contacted us as it kept us going when we were about to give up.
Best wishes.
