- Logon password shows as incorrect?

My mother-in-law's computer shows that her password that she has been using for years is all of a sudden incorrect. She didn't change the password, and doesn't really know how to do that anyway. I reset the password to just be blank using a reset disc, and the computer still says the password is incorrect and will not let a user logon. I created a second user with admin capabilities for her to still be able to use the computer, but would like to know if anyone has had a similar issue, and how they went about fixing it? Thank you
