Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Does this Morse code sound and repeat twice? I then get a DOS screen, but hard to see, and it flashes for a moment. All I have done is to shut down the computer using the power button and unplugged the chord from the wall and set the computer on the floor and this morning when I hooked up the computer the beeping started HELP

@algot1901, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The loud beeping you're hearing from your HP desktop, especially if it sounds like Morse code and occurs during startup is most likely a BIOS beep code. These beeps are a way for the motherboard to communicate hardware issues when the system can't boot properly. Here's how we can troubleshoot this:

Step 1: Identify the Beep Pattern

HP BIOS beep codes vary by model and BIOS version,

Can you describe the pattern? For example:

  • How many beeps?
  • Are they short or long?
  • Do they repeat in a cycle?

Step 2: What You Described

  • You shut down using the power button (forced shutdown).
  • You unplugged the power cord.
  • After reconnecting, the PC beeps and briefly shows a DOS-like screen.

This suggests a hardware initialization failure, possibly due to:

  • Loose RAM or GPU from moving the PC.
  • CMOS battery issue (especially if the PC is older).
  • Corrupted BIOS settings from an improper shutdown.

Step 3: Try These Fixes

Power Reset:

  • Unplug the power cord.
  • Hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and try to boot.

Check Internal Components:

  • Open the case (if you're comfortable).
  • Reseat the RAM sticks and GPU (remove and reinsert).
  • Check all power cables inside.

Clear CMOS:

  • Unplug the PC.
  • Remove the CMOS battery (a coin-sized battery on the motherboard) for 5 minutes.
  • Reinsert it and try booting again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
