Hi @RSL5,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
If Microsoft Edge opens its home page twice on first use, it could be caused by multiple startup entries or misconfigured settings. Here are the steps to address and fix this issue:
1. Check Edge Startup Settings
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click on the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Go to Start, home, and new tabs.
- Under the When Edge starts section, ensure only one option is selected:
- Open the new tab page
- Open tabs from the previous session
- Open these pages (check that only one homepage URL is listed if this option is chosen).
2. Remove Duplicate Startup Entries
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Go to the Startup tab.
- Check for duplicate or unwanted Microsoft Edge entries.
- Right-click on the duplicate entry (if any) and select Disable.
3. Check Browser Extensions
- Open Edge and click the three-dot menu.
- Navigate to Extensions.
- Disable all extensions and restart Edge.
- If the problem stops, re-enable extensions one by one to identify the culprit.
4. Reset Microsoft Edge Settings
- Open Edge and go to Settings.
- Navigate to Reset settings > Restore settings to their default values.
- Confirm by clicking Reset.
5. Check for Malware or Unwanted Software
- Use Windows Security to perform a quick scan:
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Click Quick scan or Scan options for a full scan.
- Alternatively, use third-party tools like Malwarebytes to ensure no malicious software is causing the issue.
6. Check for Duplicate Shortcuts
- Right-click on the Edge shortcut you use to open the browser.
- Select Properties.
- In the Target field, ensure no extra URLs or commands are appended (it should end with msedge.exe).
- If there are extra URLs, remove them and click Apply.
7. Update Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge and go to Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- If an update is available, install it and restart the browser.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
